❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
As per IS 2212:1991, the standard modular brick size is 230 mm × 110 mm × 75 mm. With mortar, the nominal size becomes 240 mm × 120 mm × 90 mm. This specification is also compliant with IS 1077:1992 for common burnt clay bricks.
Approximately 500 modular bricks are required for 1 m³ of brickwork in 1:5 cement mortar, including 5% wastage as per IS 2212. For 1:6 mortar, approximately 492 bricks; for 1:4 mortar, approximately 508 bricks; and for 1:2 mortar, approximately 515 bricks per m³.
9 inch brickwork (230 mm thick) is used for load-bearing external walls and is measured in cubic meters (volume). 4 inch brickwork (110 mm thick) is used for non-load bearing internal partition walls and is measured in square meters (area). The quantity calculation method differs: volume for 9" walls (L×H×Thickness) vs area for 4" walls (L×H).
To calculate brickwork quantity from a drawing: Step 1: Measure length, height, and thickness of each wall. Step 2: Multiply L × H × Thickness to get volume for 9" walls or L × H for area for 4" walls. Step 3: Identify all openings (doors, windows, ventilators). Step 4: Calculate deduction volume/area for each opening. Step 5: Subtract deductions from gross quantity to get net brickwork quantity as per IS 2212.
For 1:5 cement mortar, approximately 2.2 bags (50kg each) of cement are required per m³ of brickwork, along with 0.28 m³ of sand. For 1:6 mortar: 1.9 bags cement + 0.30 m³ sand. For 1:4 mortar: 2.65 bags cement + 0.26 m³ sand. For 1:2 mortar: 3.6 bags cement + 0.19 m³ sand per m³ of brickwork.
As per IS 2212, deductions for openings are calculated based on the actual size of the opening. For 9" brickwork, deduction volume = Length × Breadth (0.75ft) × Height of opening. For 4" brickwork, deduction area = Length × Height of opening. All door, window, and ventilation openings must be deducted from gross quantities. No deductions are made for openings up to 0.5 m² (5.38 sq.ft) in plaster work as per IS 1200.
4 inch partition wall area is calculated as Length × Height in square feet or square meters. Thickness is fixed at 4 inches (0.33 ft) and is NOT multiplied for area calculation. For volume calculation (if needed), multiply area by 0.33 ft. In this project, the net 4" partition wall area is 397.875 sq.ft (36.977 m²) after deducting door openings.
