The Moisture Content Test is performed to determine the amount of water present in a soil sample. It is one of the most important soil tests in civil engineering.

Apparatus Required

· Weighing balance

· Oven

· Moisture containers

· Soil sample

· Desiccator

Oven Drying Test Procedure

1. Take clean moisture container

2. Measure empty container weight (W₁)

3. Add wet soil and weigh (W₂)

4. Dry soil in oven at 105°C to 110°C for 24 hours

5. Weigh dry soil with container (W₃)

6. Calculate moisture content

Formula

w = ((W₂ - W₃) / (W₃ - W₁)) × 100

Where:

W₁ = Weight of empty container

W₂ = Weight of container + wet soil

W₃ = Weight of container + dry soil

Example Calculation

Weight of empty container (W₁) = 40 g

Weight of container + wet soil (W₂) = 140 g

Weight of container + dry soil (W₃) = 120 g

Step 1: Weight of Water

Ww = 140 - 120 = 20 g

Step 2: Weight of Dry Soil

Wd = 120 - 40 = 80 g

Step 3: Moisture Content

w = (20 / 80) × 100

w = 25%

Result

Moisture Content = 25%
